Hecho x Nosotros news. Potential of creative industries and their role in Latin America

Experiences from the workshop “Systemic change, social innovation, and sustainable development"

Open lab and dialogues with the community about sustainability and the role of creative industries.

In order to generate awareness and dialogue, Hecho x Nosotros conducted an Open Lab where individuals were able to talk and work on projects about creative industries, social innovation, and their benefits in topics such as migration, global warming, social inequality, and recently social struggles consequence of COVID-19.

The event was a collaboration between three creatively oriented organizations: HxN, animaná, and CAPBA. At this gathering, members shared key points about creative and cultural industries, production, sustainability, and the significance of taking an action. The session started with Adriana Marina welcoming and quickly developed into an extensive conversation that led to different team proposals.

How can we build a more egalitarian and just society in overpopulated cities?

Inequality and overpopulated cities are some of the main problems in Latin America. The lack of jobs and opportunities has forced migration into specific regions, causing damage to the environment. As a response to these problems, two solutions were given at the event. One of the teams suggests an approach based on a commitment to agroecology, plus on the model where Muhammad Yanus proposes capitalism with a social conscience using blockchain technology.

The second given solution at the Open Lab is towards regenerative cities and economy, in which every element like education and policies promotes social welfare through a circular economy paradigm.

Why does the way we dress influence climate change?

Due to the fast-fashion phenomenon, the Fashion Industry has become the second most polluting industry across the world, making us and our wardrobe decisions responsible for harming the environment. To modify this reality, the team proposes six solutions: circular economy, focus on a vulnerable population, focus on youth, generate pressure from society to the state, Green Premium, and Green New Deal.

Impairment of human well-being due to Pandemic COVID-19

COVID-19 has uncovered the deep inequality in our societies, where vulnerable groups can´t protect themselves in a crisis like this. In order to address the problem, some solutions were identified like: strengthening consumer habits for more responsible ones, providing incentives for the most affected agents by the confinement, developing digital platforms that encourage local consumption, tax breaks for people and businesses enables to continue their jobs during the pandemic, increasing investment in science at a global level and creation of common laboratories, and promoting social innovation and entrepreneurship at an academic and business levels, among others.

Migration: A framework of causes and consequences requiring a new kind of public policy

While migrants represent a strong workforce and contribute to the economies of the world, the stigma which surrounds them has driven various injustices. It was concluded at the Open Lab that a drastic change in policies and a determination by countries was imperative to ensure that the business sector does not take advantage of its fragile and vulnerable situation.

Conclusion

It is time to create solutions that will benefit society and our planet. Social inequality, pollution, and recently, sanitary emergency with COVID-19 have shown us that a model that only seeks economic benefits will only bring more problems. If we want to make a change, it is imperative to implement a system based on a circular economy and encourage relationships between creative industries.

We want to thank the collaborators and participants for their assistance to the Open Lab, only together we can create conversations and action plans to walk towards a sustainable world.
