Japan has been particularly affected by the global environmental issues, energy crisis and climate change. After the crisis called the “oil shock” in the 1970s, the government, business community and people have put a focus on making energy efforts. In 2011, the world was shocked by the disaster made by the tsunami and earthquake in Japan. Again, there was an energy crisis since 54 nuclear reactors in operation were shut down as a result of the catastrophe and therefore was an increase in the nation´s reliance of the fossil fuels. For all of these reasons, Japan is conscious about the seriousness of the problems caused on the planet by the development of societies all over the world. That explains whyJapan´s media is an example in covering environmental topics and plays a meaningful role in education. In fact, Japan had the biggest participation in the SDG media compact. Nowadays, the steps of Japan´s media are being followed by The BBC and The Guardian who are already taking action in reporting more articles on climate change.
What are the SDGs and the SDG Media Compact?
The SDGs -Sustainable Development Goals- are a call for action by all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.
The SDG Media Compact seeks to inspire media and entertainment companies around the world to leverage their resources and creative talent to advance the Sustainable Development Goals.Launched by the United Nations Secretary-General in September 2018, the Compact currently includes more than 80 members from Africa, Asia, the Americas, Australia, Europe and the Middle East.
